The Friendly Festival

Hesu, translates to 'Spirit' or 'essence of music' from Ewegbe; spoken in parts of West Africa. The band formed in 2005 as the first resident band of Pan African Arts Scotland and recorded an album after their name sake.

After a break of a few years Hesu came back together and currently operates with a core of three musicians with an additional two musicians; to create a flexible repertoire of fusion music. Our music comprises a rich blend of traditional and contemporary African, Scottish and Irish music with a hint of jazz and calypso.

Hesu brings diverse cultural experience to bear in creating uplifting rhythms, melodies and harmonies from the combined sound of bazouki, hang, saxophone, guitar, vocal harmonies, seprewa mbira, djembe, sogo and other African percussion instruments.
